Search for the best HVAC financing programs and you get lists of lenders with star ratings. That is the wrong way to choose. The best program is the one that says yes to the most of your customers, funds on your timeline, and costs what you expect. This guide shows how to compare HVAC financing programs on those terms. New to the topic? Start with our HVAC financing overview.

The three things that make HVAC financing programs "best"

Judge every program on three things, in this order.

    1. Coverage. How many of your customers get an answer they can use?
    2. Cost. What does each program cost you per financed job?
    3. Speed. How fast are you funded after the install?

Most contractors compare on cost first. That is backwards. A program with a low fee that declines a third of your applicants costs you the job, and the job is worth far more than the fee.

    Single-lender programs vs multi-lender platforms

HVAC financing options fall into two camps.

Single-lender programs. One lender, one credit box. Many are well run and well known. GreenSky, for example, reported more than 10,000 merchants and nearly 6 million consumers served when its sale to a Sixth Street-led consortium closed in March 2024. The limit of any single lender is its credit box. Customers outside it are declined.

Multi-lender platforms. One application goes to a waterfall of lenders. If the first lender declines, the next one looks. The customer applies once, and your team works from one dashboard.

The ACCA data shows why the second approach matters. In the 2026 ACCA survey, 33% of HVAC contractors using financing had a second-look option. Those contractors financed a 12% higher share of new and replacement sales.

A scorecard for comparing HVAC financing programs

Use this scorecard in every provider conversation. Score each line 1 to 5.

    QuestionWhy it matters
How many lenders see one application?Decides how many declined customers you keep
Does it cover prime, near-prime and subprime?Your customers are not all prime
Is there a lease-to-own option for HVAC?The last line of coverage for customers without traditional credit
Is 0% APR true 0%, or deferred interest?Deferred interest can surprise customers with retroactive charges
What does each program cost me, in writing?Fees vary widely by program and term
How fast am I funded after a same-day install?Cash flow on your highest-volume jobs
Can my team see every application in one place?Managers need to see declines by tech
Can customers apply on your device, by QR code, or from a text, email or web link?Customers stop when it gets hard

A program that scores 5 on cost and 2 on coverage loses to one that scores 4 on both. Weight coverage double if more than one in five of your applicants is declined today. That single number tells you which problem to solve first.

True 0% APR vs deferred interest: check the label

Many programs advertise "no interest." They are not the same.

A true 0% APR program charges no interest during the promotional period. A deferred interest program, sometimes sold as "same as cash," is different. The CFPB explains that if the balance is not paid in full by the deadline, interest is charged back to the purchase date.

Both can be useful. Your customer should know which one they are getting. Read the full comparison in true 0% APR vs deferred interest.

What the best HVAC financing program costs

Expect cost to rise with the promotion. Programs where the customer pays the interest usually cost the contractor little. Programs where the customer pays 0% usually cost the contractor the most, because the contractor is buying down the rate.

Ask for three numbers per program: the merchant fee, how it changes by term, and any monthly or setup fees. Then decide which programs you will offer on which job types. Our breakdown of HVAC financing dealer fees shows how to price this in.

    Funding speed on same-day installs

Most residential HVAC replacements are done in a day. Some financing products were built for projects with permits, inspections and draws. On a same-day install, that can mean waiting on paperwork after the system is already running.

Ask each provider exactly what triggers funding, and how long it takes after that. We cover the details in same-day HVAC install financing.

Why ticket size belongs in the comparison

Financing is not only about saving deals. It changes what customers buy. ServiceTitan's H2 2025 data shows financed HVAC jobs had a median ticket 66% higher than comparable jobs the customer chose not to finance. The company notes the link is correlational.

A program that makes the better system affordable to more customers pays for itself in mix, not only in close rate.

    Manufacturer and distributor programs

Many HVAC contractors start with the financing their equipment brand or distributor offers. It is a reasonable first step. Enrollment is easy and it is often built into the same portals you already use.

Check it against the scorecard anyway. Ask whether it covers fair and thin-file credit, whether its 0% offers are true 0% or deferred interest, and what happens when a customer is declined. A brand program can be one lender in your mix. It rarely covers your whole customer base on its own.

Red flags when comparing HVAC financing companies

A few answers should end the conversation, or at least slow it down.

    • "Everyone gets approved." No honest provider can promise that. Ask what happens to the customers who are not.
    • Fees that only show up after you sign. If the merchant cost is not in writing before enrollment, it will not get clearer later.
    • No way to see declines. If you cannot see which applications were declined, by which tech, you cannot fix your close rate.
    • A long enrollment for every new program. Adding coverage should not mean a new contract, a new portal and a new training every time.
    • Pressure to lead with one program. The best program is the one that fits the customer in front of you, not the one that pays the provider most.

A good provider welcomes the scorecard. A provider who avoids it is telling you something.

How to run the comparison in one week

    1. Pull last quarter's proposals and count how many customers applied and how many were declined.
    2. Send every provider the scorecard above.
    3. Ask each one to walk you through a declined application: what happens next?
    4. Get pricing in writing for each program you would actually use.
    5. Pick the option that keeps the most customers at a cost you have priced in.

If a single-lender program is what you run today, see GreenSky alternatives for HVAC for what changes when you add more lenders.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best HVAC financing company?

There is no single best lender for every contractor. The best program covers your full range of customers, funds fast on same-day installs, and has a merchant cost you have priced in. For many contractors that means more than one lender behind one application.

    What is second-look financing?

Second-look financing gives a customer declined by the first lender another chance with a different lender. A multi-lender waterfall does this automatically in one application.

Should I use the financing my distributor or manufacturer offers?

It can be a good start, but check whether it covers fair and thin-file credit, whether it is true 0% APR or deferred interest, and what happens when a customer is declined.

How many financing programs should an HVAC contractor offer?

Enough to cover every credit tier you see, presented through one application. More programs without one application just confuse the customer and the tech.
